This is one of the worst articles that I have read! 9 out of the 10 insites that where given had to do with EVERY job interview that you would go to and had nothing to do with a Security Job!
"The tight job market makes the interview more high stakes than ever when applying for security positions." - And how is this different than any other job? Really what field does it get easier to apply for job in during a "tight job market"?
Do everyone a favor and change the title to "The 10 most common Dos and Don'ts for Job Interviews IN ANY FIELD"
The "tip" from Lenzner is her tip. I work as an instructor and recruiting students to jobs in the IT field in general, and most of my contacts want long and detailed CVs.
The article did give very good tips about thinking from the point of view of your target audience - The interviewer.Everything you say must connect with their need and perspective and you can not try to change what they are looking for to fit what you offer.
A resume should be as succint as possible focusing on "Issues-Problems they caused-my solutions-$ or productivity results. Objective- skip that part and instead use SKILLS. List titles held and skills that you have that an interviewer can instantly relate to. Theres a screening process for electronically submitted resumes and not doing taht leaves out the keyword search catch words and its where ignoring that often means great people do not even get on the radar scree.
I'm very curious about security industry sales jobs, training jobs, channel development jobs - Here too expertise and relevant understanding is th key. How does one research and find those opportunities?
Please offer comments and advice. Thanks,
Neil Licht
Hi, Neil,
Thanks for your feedback on the piece.
With regard to other kinds of security industry jobs, have you seen CSO's 'Security Jobs' section? There are often job postings there for opportunities in sales, marketing and other roles beyond just CSO, CISO and security management positions.
Thanks,
Joan
